James Hipwell Sets Up PokerVerdict.com

Former financial journalist who co-wrote the "City Slickers" column in the UK's Daily Mirror newspaper from 1998 until early 2000 joins forces with two partners in setting up an internet site that enables poker players to find online tournaments.

Hipwell teams up with Michael Gross, the co-founder of sports-betting site Easyodds.com and Warren Wooldridge, Easyodds' CEO, to bring to poker players PokerVerdict.com, according to a press release Oct. 6.

The new site is aimed at players in the United Kingdom and Europe. The site will be featuring poker news, online diaries of famous poker personalities and a tournament search engine. PokerVerdict.com aims to meet the demands of internet gaming companies for ways to expand in Europe after the US congress passed laws prohibiting online gambling to American residents.

"The U.K. is already a fairly well-developed market,T Hipwell said, saying that there has been "huge potential" since the US prohibition. "The idea is to have a community site for poker players to tell them about the best companies to play poker on."

In February, Hipwell received a six-month jail sentence after being convicted of on count of conspiring to create a misleading impression about share values for taking part in urging readers to invest in companies that he had personal stakes in.
